A world ballet sensation, a production based on the most mystical Russian novel and a collaboration of contemporary choreographers - what is the Bolshoi Theater preparing for its 246th season?
Three new ballet performances out of nine premieres
The 246th season of the Bolshoi Theater will be rich in premieres. The audience will get a chance to see a total of nine new opera and ballet performances. General Director of the theater Vladimir Urin, Artistic Director Makhar Vaziev and Principal Conductor Tugan Sokhiev spoke about their plans for the new season during a press conference held in the Grand Imperial Foyer of the Bolshoi Theater Historic Stage.
The new ballet season starts on September 18th with the eternal classic Swan Lake. And winter 2021 will be the time of ballet premieres.
The Master and Margarita directed by Edward Klug
This ballet could have been shown for the first time back in 2020, but the coronavirus has made adjustments. Now viewers will see the premiere on December 1, 2021, at the New Stage of the theater.
In the ballet version of Bulgakov's novel, events take place only in Moscow. The Slovenian choreographer Edward Klug didn’t include the Yershalaim scenes into his libretto.
The great novel by Bulgakov is not an easy material. Many people know about mystical complications accompanying both theater and movie productions based on this text. The new ballet of the Bolshoi didn’t escape them either. First, the premiere was postponed due to the pandemic, then issues with the music copyright arose. Klug initially chose works by Shostakovich for his score, but later he had to replace them with Schnittke's compositions.
The Art of the Fugue directed by Ratmansky
For five years, from 2004 to 2009, Alexei Ratmansky worked as Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Ballet Company. The new production staged by the choreographer especially for the Bolshoi opens a new period of their creative cooperation. Bach’s compositions were taken up as the musical material. Costumes for the artists were created by stage designer George Tsypin.
The premiere of the plotless full-length ballet is scheduled for April 7, 2022.
The audience will see The Art of the Fugue ballet in two acts on the Historic Stage of the Bolshoi. Experts and professionals have already called the upcoming premiere a world sensation.
Three ballets staged by young choreographers
These performances have long been waiting for their premiere hour too. Three one-act ballets make up a single choreographic project, which will premiere on July 7, 2022, on the New Stage.
The production includes Dancemania by Vyacheslav Samodurov to music by Yuri Krasavin, The Seasons by Artemy Belyakov to music by Alexander Glazunov and Made in Bolshoi by Anton Pimonov to music by Anatoly Korolev. There are certain issues with this production as well. Two out of three authors don’t live in the capital: Anton Pimonov is artistic director of a theater in Perm, Vyacheslav Samodurov works in Yekaterinburg. Dancemania was announced back in 2018, and the entire program of one-act ballets was ready in 2020. However, the pandemic interfered with the plans. Nevertheless, they want to bring the ballet collaboration to the premiere. An evening of modern choreography awaits the audience of the Bolshoi.
