January promotions: new soloists and principal dancers

The first month of the year 2022 was marked by several important changes in the Bolshoi Ballet Company. Two artists joined the soloists. Dancer David Motta Soares moved up to the rank of a leading soloist, and ballerina Eva Sergeenkova became the first soloist.

Soares came from Brazil, graduated from the Moscow State Academy of Choreography in 2015 and found himself in the Bolshoi Ballet Company right away. Last year, he started dancing the parts of the Nutcracker, Orlando, Basil in Don Quixote, etc. In 2022, these will be complemented by roles in a few other productions, including Torero in Carmen Suite and the male part in the Symphony in C to the music by Georges Bizet.

Eva Sergeenkova's stage career began even before she graduated from the Moscow State Academy of Choreography. Last year, she first appeared on stage of the Bolshoi and soon joined the company: she danced the Queen of the Dryads in Don Quixote, performed the parts of Raymonda's friends in Raymonda. In 2022, the classic part of Odette-Odile in Swan Lake will be one of the key roles for the artist.

Earlier, we’ve also learned about other appointments: in the beginning of January, ballet dancers Jacopo Tissi and Igor Tsvirko were promoted to principal dancers of the Bolshoi Theater.

Italian dancer Jacopo Tissi is a 2014 graduate of La Scala Theater ballet school. He began his dancing career with the Vienna Ballet, and spent 2015-2016 performing on stage of La Scala. In 2017, Tissi joined the Bolshoi Ballet Company. Last year, he performed the parts of Orlando in the production of the same name, Prince Siegfried (Swan Lake), The Nutcracker. This year, he appears on the ballet stage as Romeo and performs one of the leading male roles in Jewels.

Igor Tsvirko graduated from the Moscow State Academy of Choreography in 2007. Last year, his repertoire included such roles as Spartacus and the Master (The Master and Margarita ballet), as well as the parts of the Nutcracker and Treplev in The Seagull. In 2022, the principal dancer takes the stage as Mercutio (Romeo and Juliet), performs the central male role in the ballet Jewels, as well as in several other productions.

Debuts, tours and a festival in honor of a maestro

The January performance of the ballet Jewels is associated with the names of three debutants. Vyacheslav Lopatin for the first time performed the lead in the first part, Emeralds; and Dmitry Smilevsky debuted in the main role in the second part, Rubies. Anastasia Denisova added the lead part in the Emeralds to her solo in the third part, Diamonds.

Antonina Chapkina performed the part of the Girl in the production of Orlando for the first time.

On January 2, a festival dedicated to the anniversary of choreographer Yuri Grigorovich started at the Bolshoi Theater. A cascade of festive performances started with The Nutcracker; the ballet Spartacus was also given on the Historical Stage as part of the festival.

Moreover, flamboyant guest performances were given in the first month of the year. Artists of the Bolshoi Theater took part in the Ballet Icons Gala at the Dubai Opera on January 20 and 21. The event was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the founder of the Russian Seasons and the brightest figure in the ballet world - Sergei Diaghilev. The artists took the stage to show pieces from such world-famous productions as Petrushka, Scheherazade, Afternoon of a Faun, The Spirit of the Rose, The Sleeping Beauty, Raymonda, as well as contemporary compositions. Ekaterina Krysanova, Maria Alexandrova, Artem Ovcharenko, Vladislav Lantratov, as well as artists from the world ballet companies participated in the gala.
